FYI. I guess the most important part is:

3. The ORBacus products will continue to be free for non-commercial
   use

As you are all probably aware, IONA has recently acquired OOC and its
ORBacus suite of products. Many of you have expressed some concern
about IONA's motives for this acquisition and are worried about the
future plans for ORBacus.

IONA was attracted to OOC because it recognised the strengths of both
the OOC development team and of ORBacus itself. ORBacus is a well
designed, high quality set of products developed by a very experienced
and skilled team of developers. The support provided by the OOC team
is quite rightly rated as superb by the ORBacus users and the
availability of the source code is another key factor in making
ORBacus a successful product. The OOC team have managed to create a
sizable developer momentum and sense of community around their
products, and this is something that, quite frankly, IONA have failed
to do in recent years.

Some of you are concerned that IONA is going to substantial change the
product and the way it is distributed. Nothing could be further from
the truth. IONA will continue the best practices used by OOC. We are
working very closely with Marc Laukien, Michi Henning, Matthew
Newhook, and the other members of the OOC team in making sure that any
changes are not damaging to the ORBacus developer community.

Therefore let's make it clear that IONA is committed to the following:

1. Source code will continue to be available for the ORBacus products

2. The former OOC Team will continue to provide their excellent e-mail
   based support service

3. The ORBacus products will continue to be free for non-commercial
   use

Marc Laukien has taken the position of Vice President of CORBA
Development within IONA. Marc will be responsible not only for the
ORBacus product range, but also for the whole of the Orbix 2000
enterprise product range and the Orbix 3 products. Therefore Marc
will be a major influence in the future development of CORBA
technology in IONA. All the other members of the OOC team have also
joined IONA. They will continue to do development work on ORBacus, as
well as working on Orbix 2000 development. Furthermore, members of
the Orbix 2000 team will also work on ORBacus products, bringing the
two most experienced CORBA development teams together as one.

Some things, however, will change. We will be introducing moderate
runtime license fees for certain categories of users. For small
startup companies, we will be waiving the runtime license fees for a
period of time to help them establish their products in the
marketplace without additional cost burdens.

>From this, I hope that you will see that IONA is not intent on
destroying ORBacus or pricing it out of the market. We are keen to
build on OOC's success at creating a developer community based around
ORBacus. We want to use ORBacus to introduce CORBA technology to a
new generation of developers -- people who thought that it was too
expensive for their systems. In short we want to provide you with the
best product and service available, and we will protect ORBacus as a
premier product for the technical developer community.

Regards,

Barry Morris, CEO - IONA Technologies
Marc Laukien, VP CORBA Development - IONA Technologies
