Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics 1998 (CHEP'98) is in a major series
of international conferences for physicists and computing professionals from the
High Energy and Nuclear Physics communities, Computer Science, and IT industry.
The CHEP conference provides an international forum to exchange information on
computing experience and needs for the community, and to review recent, ongoing,
and future activities.
The CHEP'98 conference includes plenary and parallel sessions, a panel
discussion, poster presentations and an industrial exhibition.
Key topics include
* Commodity Hardware & Software
* Control Systems
* Data Analysis & Presentation
* Data Management
* HEP Specific Architectures
* Local & Wide Area Networking
* Mass Storage
* Software Tools & Methods
* Triggering & Data Acquisition
* Worldwide Collaboration
Special emphasis is put on the deployment of novel computing technologies in
current and future experiments, e.g.,
* computing and software technologies for the next generation of HEP and
NP experiments
* impact of commodity software and hardware
* impact of the World Wide Web on HEP/NP computing
* organization, communication, and collaboration of large,
international, wide-spread development teams
* special architectures for high performance computing
The CHEP'98 conference is organized by Argonne and will be held at the Hotel
Inter-Continental in downtown Chicago from August 31 to September 4 1998. This
bulletin informs you about the CHEP conference's background, organizers, topics,
program and provides preliminary registration information.
History
CHEP conferences are held in roughly 12-18 month intervals, alternating
between Europe, North America and other parts of the world. Recent CHEP
conferences have been held in
o Europe - Oxford, England (1989)
o N America - Santa Fe, New Mexico (1990)
o Asia - Tsukuba, Japan (1991)
o Europe - Annecy, France (1992)
o N America - San Francisco, California (1994)
o S America - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1995)
o Europe - Berlin, Germany, (1997)
Conference Program
The program is organized with a mix of invited plenary talks and parallel
sessions. Plenary talks will cover recent, ongoing and future activities of the
HEP community, interesting technological developments of the IT industry and
novel aspects of system development. The parallel sessions are tentatively
organized into seven tracks. Their topics include, but are not limited to
A: DATA ANALYSIS & PRESENTATION
Analysis and Simulation Algorithms and Packages, Visualization,
Virtual Reality Projects, Parallelization.
B: DATA ACQUISITION & CONTROL SYSTEMS
Real-Time Monitoring and Control Systems for Experiments and
Accelerators, Data Acquisition Systems, Event Building, Trigger
Systems and Algorithms.
C: MASS STORAGE & DATA MANAGEMENT
Data Storage Technologies, Data Management Systems, Databases.
D: NETWORKING & COMMUNICATION
LAN/WAN Technology, Management and Security, WWW Applications and
Tools, Worldwide Collaboration, International WANs, Global File
Systems, Remote Services.
E: TOOLS & METHODS
Software Tools, Languages, and Environments, Object-Oriented
Technologies, Configuration Management and Collaborative Tools,
Tools for Distributed Collaborations, Quality Assurance, Dynamic
Programming, Symbolic Programming, Component Software.
F: LARGE SYSTEMS & SPECIFIC SOLUTIONS
Special Architectures, Massive Parallel Systems, LQCD Computing,
Neural Networks.
G: COMMODITY HARDWARE & SOFTWARE
Applications involving Off-The-Shelf Products, System Migration
and Portability, Desktop Infrastructure, Mobile Computing, Free
Software, PCs as Workstations.
Preliminary Conference Schedule
The CHEP'98 conference runs from Monday, August 31, to Friday, September 4,
1998. The Conference Secretariat will be available for registration and a
welcome party will be held on the Sunday evening preceding the conference.
In a separate mailing to be made shortly, we will invite submissions of papers
and posters to CHEP'98. All papers and posters accepted for the conference will
be published in the conference proceedings. Please note the submission
deadlines:
o Deadline for abstracts ------ 20 May 1998
o Author notification --------- 1 July 1998
Interactive Presentations and Poster Session
A special session will be held for poster presentations, for subjects that
benefit from the opportunity for individual discussion. Posters will be grouped
by topics, and the session will be accompanied by wine and cheese. In addition
to poster space, some stand-alone multi-media PC's will be provided to allow
participants to enhance their posters with online demonstrations of their
projects.
Participants are invited to submit detailed technical presentations directly to
the poster session. We emphasize the possibility of supplementing parallel talks
with (animated) poster demonstrations.
Conference Facilities, Material, and Proceedings
When registering at the conference, participants will receive a conference
briefcase including printed conference abstracts, program, note-pad and
pen, and Chicago city information. During the conference access to terminals
will be provided for the participants to receive and send e-mail.
Following the conference, participants will receive a multi-media CD-ROM with a
conference summary and the complete proceedings. A printed version of the
proceedings is under consideration.
Conference Location
Chicago is the third largest city in the US, with a population of approximately
3 million in a metropolitan area of about 7 million. The city is located on the
west side of Lake Michigan and is known for its extensive lakefront parks,
architectural innovation and skyline of tall buildings, plus a multitude of
world class educational and cultural institutions.
The conference location and lodging for out of town participants will be at the
Hotel Inter-Continental, located at the southern edge of the famous North
Michigan Avenue shopping and entertainment district. The location affords, in
addition to excellent conference facilities, superb access to museums,
restaurants, and the sights of Chicago.
The conference banquet will be held at the Chicago Art Institute on Thursday
evening, September 3. There will be an opportunity to tour selected exhibits in
the museum before the beginning of dinner.
Conference Registration
Conference registration forms are available on the CHEP'98 Web-Server
(http://www.hep.net/chep98) and will be distributed by email together with this
information bulletin. It is possible to register using the Web form
interactively or by sending back the completed text form via Email to
chep98@anl.gov or fax to +1-630-252-5047.
The registration fee will be 370 US Dollars for registration before July 1st,
1998, and $430 afterwards. Conference registration includes the 5 days of the
conference, welcome reception, conference dinner, and the conference briefcase.
Accommodation Booking
Accommodation is at the same hotel as the conference. The organizers believe
that it is a great advantage to participants and the vitality of the conference
as a whole that participants take advantage of the opportunity to stay in the
conference hotel and not have to commute to the conference.
The Hotel Inter-Continental Chicago, 505 N. Michigan Avenue, is ideally
located on the 'Magnificent Mile' in the heart of Chicago's shopping,
entertainment, and business district. We have reserved a block of rooms at the
conference hotel at a special low rate:
Superior Single: $103.50 plus 14.9% Local Tax
Superior Double: $123.50 plus 14.9% Local Tax
The room block is reserved under "CHEP '98"; be sure to mention this when making
your reservation to guarantee the special rate. Please note that the absolute
deadline for room reservations at this special rate is August 6, 1998. We
strongly recommend that you make use of this offer. The room rate at comparable
hotels in this area is considerably higher.
Please call the hotel directly at (312)-944-4100 or FAX your request to
(312)-321-8877. A toll-free number is available within the US: (800) 628-2112

reservation form linked to the above page CANNOT BE USED for this group room
block.
Social Program
The following activities will be offered by the organization of the workshop:
Sunday evening: Welcome reception and early registration
Tuesday or Wednesday evening: Architectural boat tour on the Chicago River
Thursday evening: Workshop banquet in the Art Institute of Chicago
During the conference week activities will be organized for those accompanying
conference participants. The program of activities will be announced on the
Web pages soon.
