Call for Papers / Call for Posters

The CHEP'98 Organizing Committee invites submissions of papers for the
                        International Conference on

COMPUTING IN HIGH ENERGY AND NUCLEAR PHYSICS

                       August 31 - September 4, 1998
             Hotel Inter-Continental, Chicago, Illinois, USA

Submissions for Parallel Sessions

Submissions of papers are invited on substantial and original research or on
innovative practical applications with relevance to all areas of computing
in
High Energy Physics, including experiments, accelerators, and theoretical
physics. Reports on practical experience with state-of-the-art technology
are
also acceptable.

Authors whose submissions are accepted for the conference will be given 20
to 30
minutes for an oral presentation, including discussion, in one of the
conference's parallel sessions.

Submissions to the Poster Session

The poster session is an alternative forum for authors to present the
results of their work. Posters cover the same content areas as parallel
session talks, but can provide better focus on technical details or
demonstration of specific solutions. It is also suitable for ongoing work
which is not yet mature enough for an oral presentation, offering authors a
chance to receive some feedback on their project while still at an early
stage.

Please note that the poster session is a separate session from the oral
parallel
sessions. Appropriate papers should be submitted directly to the poster
session.
We would especially like to encourage you to supplement technical papers of
a
parallel session with a submission to the poster session, as the poster
session
will be an ideal place for a detailed technical presentation and for a
deeper
discussion of your project.

Authors will be provided with display space and on request with a
pre-configured stand-alone multi-media PC, allowing them to enhance their
posters with online presentations or demonstrations of their work. If
possible, online material will be included in the conference summary CD-ROM.
The
CD-ROM will be distributed a few weeks after the conference.

Deadlines and Timetable

          o Deadline for abstracts ------ 31 May 1998
          o Author notification --------- 1 July 1998

Abstracts both for the parallel sessions and the poster session must be
received by the CHEP'98 Conference Secretariat by May 31, 1998.
Notification of receipt will be mailed to the first author (or designated
author). Notification of acceptance or rejection of submitted papers will
also be mailed to the first author (or designated author).

Submission Procedure and Format

Submissions should preferably be sent through the World-Wide-Web (WWW) using
a
browser such as Netscape. A submission form can be found and filled in at

           http://www.hep.net/chep98

under the topic "Abstract Submission".

Authors who do not have access to a WWW browser with forms support can
submit their abstracts via email, using the abstract submission form and
template given below.

Please indicate the preferred parallel session.

Submissions require an abstract of up to 500 words, written in English, in
plain-ASCII format or LaTeX format. Please use the template given below or
the form on the CHEP'98 WWW server.

Addresses for Submission

Preferably submit your abstract via the WWW (see above)

or send the filled template via email to

     email : chep98@anl.gov
     subject: Abstract submission

Other inquiries should be addressed to the CHEP'98 Conference Secretariat.
See
contact information at the very end of this message.

                       Preliminary Conference Schedule

The CHEP'98 conference runs from Monday, August 31, to Friday, September 4,
1998. The Conference Secretariat will be available for registration and a
welcome party will be held on the Sunday evening preceding the conference.

In a separate mailing to be made shortly, we will invite submissions of
papers
and posters to CHEP'98. All papers and posters accepted for the conference
will
be published in the conference proceedings. Please note the submission
deadlines:

          o Deadline for abstracts ------ 31 May 1998
          o Author notification --------- 1 July 1998

                   Interactive Presentations and Poster Session

A special session will be held for poster presentations, for subjects that
benefit from the opportunity for individual discussion. Posters will be
grouped
by topics, and the session will be accompanied by wine and cheese. In
addition
to poster space, some stand-alone multi-media PC's will be provided to allow
participants to enhance their posters with online demonstrations of their
projects.

Participants are invited to submit detailed technical presentations directly
to
the poster session. We emphasize the possibility of supplementing parallel
talks
with (animated) poster demonstrations.

               Conference Facilities, Material, and Proceedings

When registering at the conference, participants will receive a conference
briefcase including printed conference abstracts, program, note-pad and
pen, and Chicago city information. During the conference access to terminals
will be provided for the participants to receive and send e-mail.

Following the conference, participants will receive a multi-media CD-ROM
with a
conference summary and the complete proceedings. A printed version of the
proceedings is under consideration.

                             Conference Location

Chicago is the third largest city in the US, with a population of
approximately
3 million in a metropolitan area of about 7 million. The city is located on
the
west side of Lake Michigan and is known for its extensive lakefront parks,
architectural innovation and skyline of tall buildings, plus a multitude of
world class educational and cultural institutions.

The conference location and lodging for out of town participants will be at
the
Hotel Inter-Continental, located at the southern edge of the famous North
Michigan Avenue shopping and entertainment district. The location affords,
in
addition to excellent conference facilities, superb access to museums,
restaurants, and the sights of Chicago.

The conference banquet will be held at the Chicago Art Institute on Thursday
evening, September 3. There will be an opportunity to tour selected
exhibits in
the museum before the beginning of dinner.

                            Conference Registration

Conference registration forms are available on the CHEP'98 Web-Server
(http://www.hep.net/chep98) and will be distributed by email together with
this
information bulletin. It is possible to register using the Web form
interactively or by sending back the completed text form via Email to
chep98@anl.gov or fax to +1-630-252-5047.

The registration fee will be 370 US Dollars for registration before July
1st,
1998, and $430 afterwards. Conference registration includes the 5 days of
the
conference, welcome reception, conference dinner, and the conference
briefcase.

                           Accommodation Booking

Accommodation is at the same hotel as the conference. The organizers
believe
that it is a great advantage to participants and the vitality of the
conference
as a whole that participants take advantage of the opportunity to stay in
the
conference hotel and not have to commute to the conference.

The Hotel Inter-Continental Chicago, 505 N. Michigan Avenue, is ideally
located on the 'Magnificent Mile' in the heart of Chicago's shopping,
entertainment, and business district. We have reserved a block of rooms at
the
conference hotel at a special low rate:

Superior Single: $103.50 plus 14.9% Local Tax
Superior Double: $123.50 plus 14.9% Local Tax

The room block is reserved under "CHEP '98"; be sure to mention this when
making
your reservation to guarantee the special rate. Please note that the
absolute
deadline for room reservations at this special rate is August 6, 1998. We
strongly recommend that you make use of this offer. The room rate at
comparable
hotels in this area is considerably higher.

Please call the hotel directly at (312)-944-4100 or FAX your request to
(312)-321-8877. A toll-free number is available within the US: (800)
628-2112

Information about the Inter-Continental hotel can be found on the Web at
http://www.interconti.com/pages/c/chiica.html. However, note that the Web
reservation form linked to the above page CANNOT BE USED for this group room
block.

                        Social Program

The following activities will be offered by the organization of the
workshop:

Sunday evening: Welcome reception and early registration
Tuesday or Wednesday evening: Architectural boat tour on the Chicago River
Thursday evening: Workshop banquet in the Art Institute of Chicago

During the conference week activities will be organized for those
accompanying
conference participants. The program of activities will be announced on the
Web
pages soon.
