CVS:common

I added a README file to the common directory. It contains a description
of the classes and functions in the files in that directory.
Please add an entry for each file you put there.

I also removed some functions in gc_util.cpp. I think I'm the only one
using them so I moved them to another place. If someone needs them,
please let me know.
